Harikrishna wins Nancy Chess Festival 2009

Indian GM Pentala Harikrishna won the Nancy Chess Festival by a full point. A fantastic 7/9 gave him the title. The Indian GM finished with 5 victories and 4 draws to grab the first place. He performed brilliantly with the rating performance of 2758. GM Georg Meier won the second place, with 3 wins and 6 draws.
The B tournament was won by Ninov and the C by Brethes, both players qualified for the A and B groups of the 2010 tournament.

World Chess Challenge Round 5: Topalov beats Kamsky, takes crucial lead

Topalov started with king pawn opening, Gata  Kamsky played the French defense, he was doing fine till move 35,  but then he blundered a pawn. Veselin Topalov did well to convert this opportunity into full point. Kamsky is trailing by one full point with only 3 games to play. He will be playing with 2 White in the final 3 games.
The day started with Surprises at the start of Round 5, as we were expecting Kamsky to have white as per the match regulations, "The draw for colors will be conducted during the opening ceremony. The colors shall be reversed after game 4. However, after having black in game four Topalov had white in game five. Report with games and pictures.

Linares Chess 09 Round 4: victories for Aronian, Grischuk, Anand

It's always good to see resulting games, round 4 at Linares saw three resulting games.
In Grischuk - Radjabov game, Radjabov sacrificed a pawn in very early stage, Grischuk accepted the pawn sacrifice and enjoyed material advantage. Aronian-Dominguez game lasted 92 moves. Anand played Queen pawn opening and outplayed Wang Yue with excellent end game technique. After four rounds, Aronian and Grischuk are leading with 3 points. Report with games and pictures.

World Chess Challenge Round 4: Kamsky beats Topalov!

in the 4th game, Gata Kamsky beats Veselin Topalov to level the scores at 2-2. It is Kamsky's first victory in the match and the first time he has ever beaten Topalov.
In a closed Ruy Lopez battle, Kamsky sacrificed a pawn on move 26 to free up his Queenside pieces. Position was looking equal till move 32, Kamskya gained edge in the pawn up end game still  the position demanding excellent ending technique to convert into victory. Topalov could have resisted more but blundered on move 78 .
Kamsky's victory puts him right back in the match and he has the white pieces again for game 5 on Monday. Report with games and pictures.

Linares Chess 09 Round 3: All games drawn

In round three, players seemed to attempt for the resulting game. But all the games end with draws.
In Aronian-Radjabov game, Aronian gained some advantage with the bishop pair, but he was unable to convert into full point. In Dominguez-Anand, was a comfortable draw without any complications for both the players. In Wang Yue-Carlsen, Wang Yue had some advantage but Carlsen found a convincing way to hold the draw. In Ivanchuk-Grischuk, Ivanchuk applied Kramnik's novelty, in reply Grischuk did well and managed to hold a slightly inferior position into draw. Report with games and pictures.

Linares Chess 09 Round 1: Anand beats Radjabov

The World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand, playing after a break with fresh mind beat Azerbaijani Grandmaster Teimour Radjabov in a Sicilian Sveshnikov game. The battle continued till move 61 in a queen ending with excellent maneuvering by Anand. Other games end up with hard-fought draws.
The average rating is 2755 in this category 21 chess event. There is no appearance money for the players. Report with games and pictures.

World Chess Challenge Round 2: Topalov beats Kamsky

A lot of credit to Topalov, he does take chances and go for the win with both Black and White pieces. Topalov playing with black pieces, beat Kamsky in 32nd moves. Topalov is now leading with a full point.
In a Ruy Lopez Berlin Defence game, Veselin Topalov surprised Kamsky on move four 4. ...  Bc5, this line is generally considered risky for Black. Of course Topalov team have had prepared the line. This move set Kamsky thinking for a long period of time. Report with games and pictures.

World Chess Challenge Round 1: a fighting draw

The first game of the FIDE Candidates Chess Championship saw a fighting draw, Veselin Topalov came with a a novelty on move 17 in a Gruenfeld opening. World Chess Challenge 2009 : Topalov vs Kamsky

Candidates Chess Match between Veselin Topalov and Gata Kamsky are starting from Tuesday in Sofia. Bulgarian Grandmaster Veselin Topalov who lives in Spain will certainly enjoy the home field advantage.
Two players have not played with each other recently, but Topalov has won four of their eight and four have ended in draws. Their last game in the 2007 M-Tel Masters in Bulgaria ended in a draw. Report with games and pictures.
