For more than two decades New in Chess has set
standards of excellence in publishing chess titles. Over the years its
magazine and the yearbook have retained their appeal both to the common
player and the connoisseur. Of late it has made its foray into training
and instruction manuals. I do have some reservations about this
experiment. New in Chess is for the cognoscenti, and the common player can
be initiated into its secrets if he has reached a level of understanding.
From this point of view I have some reservations on this title under
review.
There are hundreds of books on tactics for beginners in the market. So
what is new about this book? It reminds me of the days when writers like
Reinfeld and Chernev used to churn out such stuff year after year. Surely,
in modern times higher standards are expected of authors.
Everything about this book is wrong. It hardly provides anything like a
systematic study of tactics. There are just 365 positions by way of
exercise.
The last part of the book (p.101-161) is devoted to solutions and they are
presented in random order. This makes no sense. For example, if test no.
121 proves to be difficult, one has to wade through 60 pages to find the
solution. Who has the time?
No names are attributed either to players or composers, although it is
clear that most of the examples are taken from practical play and a few
happen to be endgame studies. To say the least, it is not fair.
The blurb claims that the book starts with easy positions and the level of
difficulty would steadily rise from one example to another. This is not
true. The first test begins with a mate in one move. The last test ends
with a mate in 3. Surely, one cannot spend a whole year reading this book
and expect to improve his tactical skills by a wide margin.
The saving grace of book is that each solution is accompanied by some
simple explanation, and there is a glossary of tactical themes in the end.
If a beginner studies this book, he would develop some tactical awareness.
At least he would cease to be a wood pusher. However, I would caution
aspiring players against acquiring books of this sort.
Virtually, anybody can cut and paste exercises and produce a book on
tactics. It’s important to distinguish the grain from the chaff. If you
are a serious player intent on your tactical skills, I would recommend a
work like John Nunn’s Chess Puzzle Book
