Candidates Matches 2007 round 3: Carlsen beats top seed Levon Aronian Written by content team 31 May 2007
Day 3 in Elista was Carlsen’s, he chose to play
1.Nf3 instead of 1.e4. Aronian probably was not well prepared and after the
opening itself landed in difficulty. Magnus got strong kingside pressure in
early middle game which forced Aronian to go for a minus endgame .The technical
part (May be I can say tactical technique!) Was outstanding and he did not give
any chance, it was all over after 27.Nf5! and soon after Aronian resigned. In
the other games, Peter Leko beat Mikhail Gurevich, Gata Kamsky beat Etienne
Bacrot and Rublevsky beat Ponomarionv with black pieces. Leko and Kamsky are
leading at the half-way mark.
The Candidates Matches for the 2007 World Chess Championship Tournament will be
held in Elista, Russia from May 26 to June 14 2007. 16 grandmasters will play
two rounds of six-game matches. Top 4 players would qualify for the 2007 World
Championship in Mexico City.

Leko’s
victory was again artistic! He countered Gurevich’s French defence in a slow
positional manner, exchanged queen’s early, got a slight edge after opening and
punished over ambitious 23…. b3?! Accurately. The final position of this game
was picturesque See the position..
Kamsky struck again. This time it was (strange at this level, but mental
pressure is starting to show) it was rather easy. It started with Anti-Marshall,
but soon Bacrot managed to get d5 anyway. There was no opening problem for
black, then he started to play in an original way (14…Kh8) hoping for an attack,
but when it was time to take a clear decision, to lash out with f5 anyway he
refrained from doing so, and from that point his play was unrecognizable, and
lost almost without a fight in 37 moves.
The other winner is the less known Russian GM Sergey Rublevsky, he could be the
dark horse in this candidates. Solid and slow normally, with excellent
technique. He outplayed Ponomariov from a seemingly harmless (at times it looked
even better for Pono!, but which was actually more comfortable for Rubley)
position. Showing excellent handling in a Queen and minor pieces endgame.
Probably pono missed some drawing chances at the end; still it was not easy to
defend it at board anyway. Thus giving the Underestimated Russian the lead.
Among other games Kasimdzanov was better against Gelfand after the latter
experimented with a less played variation in Anti-Moskow Gambit in Semi-Slav and
landed in difficulty soon after opening, somehow he managed to get a draw at the
end. Adams shirov was all preparation, 14…g5! Was a good novelty forcing white
to go for draw by repetition. Grischuk Malakhov was also rather dull . Malakhov
chose a less played line in Berlin and managed to get Grischuk not prepared
enough to claim any advantage, soon everything was exchanged and they draw.
Polgar started with panov attack against Bareevs Caro-Kann, Bareev improvised
his old game with Grischuk in 2004 ,when Polgar did not go for the best
continuation with 13.Bb5 ,the game soon became rather equal, although they
played it out till the end the result was never in doubt.
So that’s all for today! I hope you will enjoy the games.
