Round 6 saw Shirov coming back into tie-breaks with a slow win against Adams in
an endgame. Adams made a few inaccuracies in the queen less middlegame and was
meticulously ground down by Shirov. Bareev made a hard fought draw and has won
the match with 3.5-2.5. There was a must win
situation for Shirov, Polgar and Ponomariov in the 6th round but Polgar and
Ponomariov failed to score full point in the final round.
The Candidates Matches for the 2007 World Chess Championship Tournament are being
held in Elista, Russia from May 26 to June 14 2007. 16 grandmasters will play
two rounds of six-game matches. Top 4 players would qualify for the 2007 World
Championship in Mexico City.
Round 5 saw Carlsen winning with Aronian in QID and
equalising the score 2.5-2.5. It was fine display of powerful play from the
opening and a crisp finish in the endgame. Judit managed to stave off match
defeat with an attacking win over Bareev in a Nc3 Caro Kann, final score was
3-2.
Adams drew with Shirov in an uneventful game from a Qe2 Ruy Lopez. He needs a
draw in the final game with black to win the match, the final score was 3-2.
Grischuk sealed the match with a draw against Malakhov from a sicilian classical
variation.
Gelfand-kasim was a well fought game from a Meran Semi Slav. Kasim seemed to be
in a spot of bother but defended well in the endgame to secure the draw, the
final score was 2.5-2.5.
Ponomariov-Rublevsky was a nice draw by Rublevsky in a Kramnik Slav. He needs a
draw in the final game to complete a major upset, he won the match with 3-2
score.
In Round 6, Aronian seemed to be in a better position from a Slav
defence. At one point he was a pawn up, but could not convert his advantage into
a win with his white this time. This would leave us with an interesting tie
break situation as both are known to be good rapid players. Kasim-Gelfand was a
quick draw. Clearly both players want to head to the tiebreaks! Rublevsky drew
comfortably and won his match with Ponomariov.
